Hospice on the hunt for star singer again

THE search is on once again for Basildon’s St Luke’s Hospice to find its own special singing star as the dates of its annual singing competition are announced.

Anita Whelan, organiser of Voice 4 St Luke’s, says: “It is a really fun competition and offers all sorts of opportunities for youngsters living in our local area to progress their vocal ability, and help support St Luke’s along the way.”

Last year’s winner, then 16 years old, was Cara Lea Dawson.

“Entering the competition gave me a huge boost in confidence and has given me the chance to believe in my ability,” Carla says.

“Since winning I have sung at the St Luke’s charity ball, which was a completely new and different environment for me. It gave me a chance to sing a greater number of songs than I am used to and set a personal challenge as well.

The competition, now in its fifth year, is open to all amateur, solo singers who are under 18 on October 9.

Following auditions, two heats are held in an X-Factor fashion where scores are given by a panel of judges. The top ten singers from each heat go through to a grand final at the Thameside Theatre, in Grays. Prizes include a day in a recording studio.

Auditions take place at St Luke’s, St Luke's Hospice, Fobbing Farm, Nethermayne, on Saturday between 10am and 1pm. To book an audition slot or for more details call Anita Whelan on 01268 272292 or e-mail anita@stlukeshospice co.uk
