Seven arrested in roads crackdown
SEVEN people were arrested and 35 vehicles were stopped and checked as police carried out a crackdown on the roads.
Codenamed Operation Mermaid, the crackdown - which aims to target poorly driven and dangerous commercial vehicles - saw officers based at the Moto Services on the M25 at Thurrock on Thursday.
They checked vehicles were taxed, insured and
roadworthy, seizing those which were dangerous or uninsured.
Among those arrested were two women and two teenage girls suspected of stealing food from a local supermarket.
A man from South London who was stopped while driving a tipper lorry was arrested and charged after officers found he was a disqualified driver and two men from Kent were arrested and bailed in connection with the theft of tyres.
Seven other vehicles were seized for having no insurance, three drivers were found to have out of date MOTs and three drivers were stopped for not wearing seat belts.
One driver is beings prosecuted for using a van in dangerous condition after a passenger was found sitting in a fold-up garden chair in the back of the vehicle. He was given a £60 Fixed Penalty Notice and three points on his driving licence.

Balls I say.
Too much death and destruction on the roads and these people caught are the ones who cause it.
Also good news that other criminals have been caught.
More Police on the roads, not less.

Let them get the job done and perhaps this tosspot government could actually do one thing right by making sure the courts do mete out real justice.
Then we would all be better off!

As the likelihood of being stopped by the policies is usually tiny, by undertaking a mermaid operation in random areas across Essex everyday would deter much of the flagrant disregard for the law described in this article. It would also cut the traffic down by a third in Westcliff which has got to be a good outcome for everyone.

It would be interesting to know what percentage of vehicles stopped were found to be faulty / untaxed and how many people were actually questioned by the police compared To those arrested. Perhaps we could then work out if this exercise is worth repeating. This is done in Conjunction with Certificated bailiffs and their Specialist ANPR Vehicles which Hold huge databases of Unpaid Court Fines and Vehicles Obtained by Deception etc ( which Police ANPR does not, even though it is the same Cleartone 500 system )
This actions of the Bailiffs Executing Warrants leads to the removal of many Persistant traffic Offenders Vehicles and helps detect many incorrectly registered vehicles being removed from the road and Sold in Public auction to Pay Unpaid Court fines.
Many of these Vehicles turn out to have Connections to Crime or are being driven by Known Criminals, but registered to Unknowns on Police ANPR and were Not previously Flagged on their Systems.
Criminals know that Once a vehicle is ' Known ' it will be repeatadly Stopped and Searched, they go to Great lengths to Drive ' Clean ' vehicles especially when imvolved in transporting Drugs and contrabrand they are Very aware of The National chain of static and mobile ANPR units.
People that haver a total disregard for The Law anyway Park in Bustops on Redroutes, Box junctions, Dont pay Comgestion Charges etc and ignore the Fines they accumalate and end up on Bailiff ANPR Systems and have their ' Clean ' Vehiclres Siezed as a result On A Judges Order
( Warrant of Execution ) for the Seizure Removal and Sale of said Vehicle.
The Police are totally Unaware of the existance of a Warrant for a Particular vehicle because only a Bailiff Not a Police Officer can Execute it.
The Met have One team that Work with Bailiff ANPR ( Camera Proactive ), on a Daily / Nightly basis because of the High Level of results Obtained.
This is Not Unfortunatly, to My Knowledge done in Essex, but Would be availiable to the Essex Police free of Charge, if required and Should Certainly be Part of Special Ops like Mermaid.
Our company alone Operates 33 of these Specialist Vehicles, but nearly all Operate in the London Boroughs.

This, as far as I am concerned, must be because of political interference with our Police.
It should be natural to expect the Police to be far more technically advanced than the Bailiffs. The only reason, as always, is that the budget obsessed Chiefs are, as always, reducing the Indians and their effectiveness by taking their own orders from some crazy right wing mob, whose very essence is to attack anybody that works for a living, letting free the billions of pounds saved for Bankers to play their versions of Roullette. when the judges tried to legalize underage homosexuality in the house of Lords (and failed) I think it actually showed everybody why they want the justice system to fail. The Westminster club has far more to lose than any of us if law and order became meaningful!
