New waste site for Pitsea?

BASILDON could be saddled with yet another major waste site if new plans for a depot dealing with 49,000 tonnes of junk are approved.

Heard Environmental, a waste disposal company based on Basildon’s Burnt Mills industrial estate, has applied to Essex County Council for permission to open a waste transfer station on three acres of land off wasteground off Terminus Drive, Pitsea.

The site, which would be used to sort rubbish and recycling before it is moved to other sites, would have 50 lorries trundling in and out each day.

The news comes as the Echo can reveal there are fears nearby Veolia-run Pitsea landfill site may have to stay open for another year, adding to pressure on Pitsea Hall Lane.

The latest application has also renewed calls for the weak bridge in Pitsea Hall Lane over the c2c railway line to be strengthened amid safety fears.

Loraine Fletcher, 36, from Chestnut Road, Pitsea, is objecting.

She said: “We have already got the landfill site which reeks so much in the summer we can’t even open the windows.

If we get another one literally under our kitchen window we will never be able to sell this flat because we already have the A13 and railway line.”

Keith Bobbin, a Labour Pitsea councillor, said: “Pitsea has had enough of this. We have got the landfill site, Courtauld Road was passed this year, and now this.

The road can’t take another 100 lorry movements a day, especially not over the bridge.”

The bridge has been under a protection scheme, meaning traffic has to pass in single file for several years, but plans to strengthen it have been on hold due to a funding row.

Mr Bobbin said: “The bridge is so weak, I do not think it will take that many more vehicles. Network Rail owns the bridge, but they have been trying to get more money out of Veolia for the work, it needs strengthening and a footpath.”

Mr Bobbin sits on a liaison group of residents which meet with Veolia about the landfill site.

He added: “Because of all the recycling there is less going into landfill and the tip is not filling up quickly enough so Veolia are talking about keeping it open now until 2018, that is the rumour.

If this new application is passed there could be big traffic issues in the road for years to come.” Fellow Pitsea councillor Aiden McGurran said: “Yet again Pitsea is being dumped on.

I am not happy with the timing of this application.

People had until Christmas day to object, but at that time of year they have other things on their mind, so I have asked if the county council will allow an extension.”

Canvey would seem the most likely location, it is fanned by good sea breezes, already has an odour from the gas depot, has has large swathes of open land, in it's western area.

This planning application is a joke. Go take a look at the place,it is already being used as a dump.there are lorries delivering there daily and they have already installed a weighbridge.There are hundreds of tons of Hardcore already being stored there with about 50 waste skips.. A fence is now being erected to hide what is going on from the public.

Yes, that site has operative for many months now. I wonder if they are thinking of extending it across the footpath onto the scrap of land that runs beneath the flyover?

Then there's that piece of land the other side of the railway crossing in between the Rail Works Depot and the Horse and Pony Sanctuary where there's been quite a bit of activity lately from blokes in Council marked vans

I am told the land opposite belongs to Essex county council.
I think it is pointless trying to extend the time to object as the site has been up and running for nearly a year. How can the council consider this a planning application when it is already operating as a recycling site.
Seems something fishy going on here.

Why do people post comments on here about something they simply don't know the full facts about or fully understand it seems?, there is alot of presumption going on...if people took the time to study the facts & history of the site they would in fact realize that this site is in fact always been a 'Minerals' & storage site, and as to the comments about the company already doing what they have applied to do & they are not dumping / tipping rubbish/waste on the site & I can also advise mis- informed people that the weighbridge the company have placed their is actually sitting on top of the original weighbridge which was installed in the early 1980's!!...get your facts right people before you pass incorrect comments, and how do I know this, I live in nearby Chestnut Road and have walked my dogs for years on site before it was fenced off & one of my relatives work for the company at present, me personally I think people should remember that we nearly had the Dale farm Travellers on this site, I'd rather a Demolition/ skip company than them on the site as anyone in their right mind would....our area needs employers like them and jobs, I walked up to station today & the company have had their men there all over xmas period tidying up & improving the footpath all the way to Road, I'm thankful myself.

I also have walked my dog on the site for the past 4 years.,in all that time it has been open waste land with no weighbridge and certainly nothing has been stored there.I am not against the company being there but the way a planning application has been submitted when it is already in operation.

New waste site !? The company, Heard Waste have been operating on this site for many many months now. It is filling with cr@p on a daily basis and the stockpile is getting higher by the day. The bund around the site has been in place from the start. I would have throught they had permission to use this site for waste ......but maybe not ?

Thanks Tom, at last someone has confirmed what I have been saying .
As I said this whole planning application seems really dodgy to me,maybe someone from the Council can explain it but I doubt it.

I really think the people of pitsea should think this through.This is just what pitsea needs to brighten up the place and i think it will blend in well with the surrounding areas . For years all we have had in pitsea is a car wash , a bingo hall , and a second rate dodgy market . it will be so refreshing to get all the family together of a weekend , grab a blanket and a picnic containing pineapple and cheese on a cocktail stick , scotch eggs , mini flans , cheese and onion sandwiches etc etc and sit by the recycling plant watching all the rubbish being recycled ahhhhhhhh beautiful , cmon my fellow pitseaites lets get behind this great new adventure and thank our local council for all their hard work in giving us yet another wonderful opportunity to enhance our otherwise miserable lives .

How can you be so cruel , pitsea is a wonderful place you just have to have a very vivid imagination , for instance we have erm erm a flyover , a most beautiful derelict pub with its own multi-national car wash outside , erm , a wonderful grade x derelict bingo hall , erm a train station , erm erm loads of wonderful brick faced rectangular flats with a flyover view erm erm traffic lights erm ,well thats it really .I think a waste recycling site will blend in well with the area and cant wait until its there standing in its full beauty .

nt!....I haven't laughed so much in ages!....only shame is I live in 'Pitshyte' as Mr Carnabackable refers to it (Bit harsh)....but I'm afraid to say he is sort of right, its hardly an oil painting and its an Industrial town as is Basildon...however its kept alot of my family & friends in work since I can remember so its not all bad and in these times we're thankful for the work.
