PEOPLE power has seen off controversial plans for year-round parties at a sixteenth-century manor house in a quiet country lane.

Borwick Lane Residents’ Association successfully overturned at Basildon Magistrates Court an alcohol licence Basildon Council granted for parties and weddings at Nevendon Manor in Borwick Lane Wickford.

However, the win could be short lived as Jane Aprile-Smith, the owner of the mansion, which has hosted a series of lavish Halloween and bonfire parties, has already made a new application, which has led to fears she may also want it run like a pub.

Residents remain committed to the legal battle and said more would turn up to object at the next licensing hearing amid fears if approved it will lead to year-round noisy nights and traffic problems in single-track Borwick Lane.

The court overturned the licence on technical grounds because the original licensing application was not properly advertised around the property.

Mrs Wiley said that had meant some residents nearby were unaware and had been unable to object to the original application.

There were just a small number of events before the licence was revoked.

Miss Aprile-Smith has been hosting unlicensed parties at the manor for a number of years as a tenant, but took ownership of the £675,000 property last August after making the first application.

The Echo contacted her about the revocation and she declined to comment.
