Canvey councillors call for change to community meetings
4:00pm Saturday 16th February 2013 in News By Luke Lambert
Dave Blackwell, John and Janice Payne are just some of the councillors calling for change
CALLS have been made to change the current format of council neighbourhood meetings due to poor attendances.
Castle Point Council brought about changes in May last year to hold one big meeting on Canvey rather than several localised ward meetings. But the change has led to a drop in attendance of 75 per cent.
Councillors on the island are worried that residents are missing important discussions involving the future of the new local plan and other items of interest.
The issue came to a head on Wednesday night when councillors outnumbered residents 14 to 13 at a meeting held in Canvey Methodist Church in Waarden Road.
Peter May, Canvey Independent councillor in central ward said: “The neighbourhood meetings were so well attended. They were always full and were comfortable with a friendly atmosphere. These are more like a formal chat and no-one likes them.”
Dave Blackwell, leader of the Canvey Independent Party and a local councillor for 18 years, added: “The councillors don’t like it. The residents don’t like it. These meetings are not accessible enough and no-one is told about them. We see the same faces every week and as nice as that is we want it how it used to be with up to 50 people speaking to their ward councillors.”
A Castle Point Council spokesman said the newer meetings helped “reduce bureaucracy” and led to a more “informal” discussion about residents concerns. The spokesman added: “The council will be reviewing its arrangement for all council meetings once again in May but like all changes sometimes they take time to settle down.”

This now means that, as you will see from other posts on other matters made at this meeting there is no record, so no accountability and no proof of what was said. Do you call that democracy or transparency, because I don't?
Cue the usual critics to knock me down even though they were not at the meeting.

You are so right. I was at this meeting and this is only part of the story of that meeting. However, the biggest single thing the Council has done is that the format change means no minutes recorded, and any matters of concern are not brought back to,the next meeting as in the past. In the past they at all the Neighbourhood Meetings properly minuted and matters to be addressed were brought back and update.

the running of the meetings is down to the chairman and all the meetings are run differently, under the control of each wards, reporting back is the responsibility of the Cllrs , it is for the residents to keep the Cllrs to reporting back. It is poor advertising to blame that and the cancellation of the last round of meetings.

There is no "each Ward scenario". The wards are lumped together and now no minutes taken. What you appear to be referring to is the old format.

Canvey Canvey Canvey, go away, I'm sick of hearing the woes of that turd in the Thames.

Nothing happens on Canvey because we are Castle Point and they will never agree to anything that benefits Canvey whoever is elected. Look at project 2000 on the sea front. Never finished. Look at the Sea wall it was only finished for the 1/4 mile in front of the amusements on the sea front. If you are under 5FT 6INS you cannot sea over the rest of it. Oh when I said sea front amusements I meant flats. There is no point in attending any meetings of voting for a Canvey council Canvey has been abandoned. Even our local MP cannot be bothered about Canvey. Unless of course its voting time and she wants to carry one the gravy train ride which is today's politics.

Canvey is a den of inequity. The men give the carp in the lakes herpes, the women burn down their homes frying chips. Until recently the word 'sister' also meant wife for many Canvey folk. Open the floodgates and let the sea cleans the filth once and for all.
