Work begins on dog rehoming centre as famous faces look on
4:00pm Saturday 23rd February 2013 in News
L/R Mark Francois the MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, Amy Childs, Mayor of Basildon Mo Larkin, Dogs Trust Chairman Philip Daubeny with Lionel, Dogs Trust CEO Clarissa Baldwin with basil and Councillor Tony Ball, leader of Basildon Council.
THE first spade went into the ground to signal the start of works to build a £6.8million dog rehoming centre yesterday as a host of famous faces watched on.
Works began on building the Dogs Trust building on land by the Nevendon roundabout, off the A127.
Former Only Way is Essex star Amy Childs was among the guests celebrating the start of the centre’s construction.
The charity’s new centre will be complete in 2014.
Miss Childs, 22, said: “It’s amazing to be part of such a great charity and I can’t wait for the centre to open up here.
“We’re all animal lovers in Essex and it will be great for the county.
“I absolutely love dogs and I think I’ll probably be down here every week when it opens.”
The five-acre site, which is expected to open its doors next spring, will have 69 glass kennels, a veterinary suite, rehabilitation centre, exercise areas, and a training barn.

For famous read "Natorious" and it all makes sense. They care more about dogs and money than they ever did about the people of this area they are supposed to, but never will, represent.

why not spend £ 6.8 m on local welfare if theres money to be thrown about, what about the elderly, homeless, or even the hospital, now theres 3 good reasons to spend money more wisely than on a dog thats been thrown on the street

(Yes they did, Google it for yourself)
I think that includes animals, especially Dogs here in the UK.
I've no idea if this is a genuine charity which provides relief for our Mutts, or just some PR fakery, and used for Tax avoidance, etc.
But its not the animals fault.
And who told the Mayor of Baz wearing a fur coat would give the right message to animal lovers.

There ae a shocking number of abandoned animals and like most people I wish the charity every success in their aim to rehome them. There is just a sneaking suspicion this massive sum of denoted money will not be spent as cost effectively as a donor would expect.
Surely they can fit more than 69 dogs on 5 acres?? I have been to very high quality boarding kennels in Essex where they take in far more than 69 pets and the premises are nearer a third of an acre.
Echo reporters, surely there is more to this story than ex-D list celebrities?

Dogs Trust is a registered charity and run very well considering the size of it. I am not part of Dogs Trust but have had to deal with both them and the RSPCA in the past when involved with the rescue of a large number of Dogs from a dodgy breeder. Dogs Trust were excellent, the RSPCA were absolutely useless.
This Dogs Trust site will be a rehoming centre, where they take in unwanted and abandoned Dogs, assess them and give them any required veterinary care, then when they are ready they find them new homes.
The kennels will be temporary accomodation to house the dogs while are being rehomed. As part of the assessmant of the animals and to provide them with the required amount of exercise, which they have to do on their own land they do need plenty of open space. This space is also used when assessing the suitability of dogs with their potential new owners.
As for a high quality kennels having only a third of an acre, where do they walk and exercise the dogs, that is nothing like enough space unless they exercise them in the local park and leave all their mess behind.
I do agree though that I bet this ends up being full of staffs as there are too many stupid people in Basildon who buy them and don't bother training them so that they become unmanageable. Staffs are brilliant pets, until they end up in the hands of irresponsible owners.

And in Rayleigh, Westcliff, leigh, Chalkwell, Wickford, Billericay and anywhere else. They have proved again and again to be an unpredictable dog and this has not been restricted to Basildon, as you would appear to think. Why pick on a town when it is a problem with people, not geography!
So many people commenting on here who have absolutely no idea. Basildon Council have not had to spend any money on this, and neither are they receiving any money from this. The charity is footing the entire bill for this paid for by donations they receive from members of the public.

All dogs can be unpredictable if not trained and handled properly, they are animals after all and rely on their owners for guidance. I don't think Staffs are any different to any other breeds, it just seems to be that Staffs have an over population of bad owners.
