Man blinded in random mugging in Grays
4:00pm Saturday 2nd March 2013 in News By David Trayner
DETECTIVES have issued a renewed appeal for information about a serious assault in Grays after doctors confirmed that the victim has lost the sight in one eye.
The 51-year-old man suffered a broken jaw and broken left eye socket in the attack on Sunday, February 17.
He was walking at London Road, Grays at about 10pm when he was attacked from behind and fell unconscious to the ground.
He did not see or hear his attackers and £40 was stolen from his pocket as he lay on the pavement.
Appealing for witnesses to come forward this afternoon, Saturday, March 2, Detective Sergeant Natalia Ross said: "This was an appalling attack on this man who has now been told that he has lost the sight in his left eye.
"The circumstances of the incident are unclear because the man was attacked from behind and did not see the people involved. The injuries would suggest that the man was kicked or punched a number of times while he was unconscious on the ground, but we cannot be sure.
"It seems that the man was the victim of a random attack, but again, we cannot be sure of the motive because it seems to have happened so quickly. We want to hear from anyone walking or driving past and might have seen who was responsible.”
Anyone with information should contact DS Ross, DC Rob Brook or colleagues at Grays CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

It would appear the Detective Sergeant has been reviewing my comments on here.
Its certainly didnt seem like a random mugging (although it could have been).
Man suddenly decides to go out at 10pm on a Sunday night for a stole (he was not on his way to or from work / home from the pub or Church service) He also decided to put cash in his pocket (remember he was not going to the shop, just a stroll) Despite being badly attacked & apparently robbed he did not call the police, it was only in fact the next day after going to hospital that the police were not informed. Unfortunately the victim was not, (some would say not willing) to help the police because he didn't see or hear anything.
I hope they catch these mystery attackers ,although Im keen to find out what this was really all about.
There is certainly more to this than meets the eye.
