Men spotted attempting to steal from school roof

POLICE were called to a Basildon school following reports of two men stealing from the roof.

Security guards from De La Salle School, in Ghyllgrove, raised the alarm just after 8.15pm on Saturday after spotting the men fleeing the premises in an unknown vehicle.

It is believed they left in the direction of Cranes Farm Road.

Officers carried out an extensive search of the area and the police helicopter was deployed, but the suspects were not found.

De La Salle is currently undergoing a massive £8.5million refurbishment to introduce a new two-storey teaching block and single-storey fitness suite.

Police are now working alongside contracters at the school site to establish whether anything was taken before the men were disturbed.

Inquiries are continuing.

did the fleeing vehicle illegally use the bus link to get onto Cranes Farm Road? If so the cameras that are there to catch non taxi/bus traffic will have them - if they really work or are just there for show/deterrent value.....

Why the hell was a police helicopter called for? If the vehicle was unknown in the first place, what was the helicopter possibly trying to look for? Even if they did know the make and model of the car it would be like trying to pinpoint a needle in a haystack especially of a night time. Well done Essex police. Great police force we have.
