A LAINDON mother and her four children have been without gas for more than a week after National Grid carried out repair works.

Maria Garrett, 50, from Jermayns says the gas went out last Wednesday and has not gone back on since.

The entire street lost use of their gas heating and cooking facilities although all other properties have since been remedied.

She says she and her four children, the youngest of which is four, have had to eat takeaways all week and are getting sick of National Grid’s failed attempts.

Mrs Garrett said: “It is not good enough. This is a problem that should have been fixed by now and it is not happening quick enough. My children are between four and 16 and they should not be living in this way. We pay for a service and we are not getting it.”

National Grid have been carrying out vital gas mains and service pipe replacement work in the road. They needed to temporarily disconnect gas supplies to the properties and residents were warned that the work would be carried out and were sent information packs and cards, which explained when the work would be done.

A National Grid spokesperson said: “We spoke to the resident who informed us that they did not use gas so in line with this we disconnected the gas supply. However they have since been in touch with us again and we are now arranging for their gas supply to be reconnected. We are currently looking at options for connecting the property and will work with the resident to progress these. They were given an electric heater and cooking appliance as an interim measure. For more information on our work people can call 0800 096 5678 - they should also ask to see official identification before letting people in.”
