Burglar jailed after two month spree
MAN who carried out a two-month burglary spree has been locked up for 15 months.
Basildon Crown Court heard he stole a laptop and jewellery from a house in Colchester during another break-in, and £250 worth of jewellery from a home in Crown Close, Pitsea.
During his crime spree, which took place in August and September, Smith also stole £1,500 of jewellery from a house in The Upway, Basildon.
Smith, of Swanstead, Vange, had previously stayed at the Swan House Foyer in Southview Road, Vange, which caters for unemployed young people looking for work and in need of help with education, training or employment.
He carried out the burglaries with one or two accomplices at a time, but refused to name them. Smith admitted four counts of burglary and two of fraud after using the stolen bank cards at second-hand goods store CEX and loan store Cash Generator.
Judge Jonathan Black sentenced him to 15 months in prison and ordered him to pay a £100 victim surcharge.
Addressing Smith at court yesterday, Judge Black said: “These are serious offences.
The property owners suffered a degree of sentimental loss and there was a degree of ransacking by removing clothes from wardrobes and drawers and a degree of vandalism by the way you entered the properties.
“It’s quite clear you were the sole motivator of these offences and there was at least one other person with you when these offences took place.”
