WORK is under way to build a new Aldi supermarket in Pitsea.

The former market has been demolished to make way for the new Aldi, which will take 67 weeks to build.

Construction has started on the outer shell of the supermarket.

The new store forms part of major plans for two new supermarkets and a new market to regenerate the area.

Paul Murrock, the project manager for main contractor Vinci Construction UK, said: “After 14 weeks on site, it’s fantastic to achieve our first major milestone.

“Progress on the store will be swift – a steel frame will rise rapidly from the ground and will be completed as soon as the end of the month.”

Morrisons will be the second store on the site, coming to Pitsea for the first time.

Traders have been told special measures will be introduce to minimise disruption for them.

Mr Murrock said: “Market stallholders and local businesses have been very patient throughout, as have the public and the staff of the Dipple Medical Centre.

“As we progress, we will be listening to their feedback to ensure the work is completed as quickly and safely as possible”.

Several local subcontractors were involved in the demolition, including Grays-based John F Hunt and Ground Control, from Billericay.

Mr Murrock added: “The end result will significantly improve the look and feel of the area and provide a much needed boost to local traders.

“We are speaking with Basildon Council regarding apprenticeships and training opportunities and really want to make sure that young people have an opportunity to be involved in the future of their town.”

This is the second phase of the project which is due for completion in November 2014.

The first handover, the medical centre car park, was completed only nine weeks after commencement on site.
