JEREMY Hunt visited Basildon Hospital yesterday to announce a businessman will be stepping in to make the NHS more efficient.

The health secretary unveiled Sir Stuart Rose, former boss at Marks and Spencer’s, as the man who will transform underperforming hospitals across the UK.

They took a tour with Basildon MP Stephen Metcalfe and talked to patients and staff throughout the afternoon.

Mr Hunt is visiting all hospitals which were scrutinised by last year’s Keogh inspections into poor death rates to see how they have improved.

Rose will do nothing with NHS management and their culture. What I have seen in the NHS is a complete lack of managerial responsibility throughout the whole structure from the top down. The CEOs of the trust are usually full of themselves, hardly answer questions to pertinent problems and go on in their own sweet way as there is no whip to make them do any different. I remember Maggie the iron lady trying to do something about the inefficiency and bureaucracy that abounds in the NHS within management (note that I do not say the foot soldiers - doctors, nurses and doers) and even she failed miserably. Therefore if even a capitalist prime minister could not do anything with the poor management and abysmal culture within the NHS, Rose will definitely not make any meaningful inroads in the needed change within the top and middle management of the NHS. Everything is stacked against him even though in his naivety he may think that he may be able to do something. Indeed the NHS is not just a different animal to M&S it is a completely different beast that apparently even prime ministers cannot slay.

Surely it would have been better to get the Chief Executive of The Pound Shop; a business that is truly "on the up." . Also they sell pregnacny tests bleach, tissues,a host of medicines, glasses and even colouring books for the children's waiting rooms.
