Northern Lights stun Essex

AN ASTRONOMICAL phenomenon reached as far south as Essex last night in what experts are calling a once-in-ten-years' event.

People reported seeing the Northern Lights across the county because of the clear skies.

Scotland and Norfolk also caught a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis in the extremely rare event.

The ethereal light displays are caused by collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter into the earth’s atmosphere.

But the photo above shows them. I am sure there are mountains in Essex - they must be up in the northern part of the county - I must get out more often.

But plenty of experienced watchers saw nothing so I'm sceptical. I haven't seen any Essex photos.

You needed a pretty unobstructed view to the North.
That's why good views were had from the North Norfolk coast.
