Prolific burglar jailed for break in

Basildon Recorder: Matthew Cook Matthew Cook

A PROLIFIC criminal is behind bars after an off-duty officer caught him looking into back gardens moments after he burgled a house.

Matthew Cook, 31, of Thornbush, Basildon, and his friend Gary Goodwin, 34, of Princes Close, Laindon, smashed the patio doors of the home, in Forest Glade, Langdon Hills, on January 6, to get inside.

Basildon Crown Court heard the pair, who admitted the offence, left cupboards and drawers open in their search before putting electrical items and jewellery worth £1,000 in holdalls.

They jammed a key in one of the front door locks before leaving.

However, an off-duty officer saw the pair looking over fences and called in the information.

Police searched the scene and the two men ran off when they were spotted.

Officers tracked them down and discovered one of the holdalls, recovering some of the stolen items.

They could not find the second bag, containing a wedding ring, engagement ring and the victim’s grandmother’s ring.

The court was told the pair were addicted to drugs and had burgled to fund their habits, with Cook spending £630 a week at one point.

It also heard Cook, who had previously been convicted of two burglaries, had appeared before the courts 33 times before over 85 offences, and Goodwin had made 21 appearances for more than 30 offences.

Judge Ian Graham sentenced Cook, a father of two, to two-anda- half years in prison for the burglary.

Goodwin was sentenced to 12 months behind bars, suspended for 18 months.

He was also sentenced to 18 months probation and a drug rehabilitation programme.

Judge Graham said: “As far as your record goes, Cook, it is pretty bleak. This is your third dwelling burglary.”

He added: “There have been too many chances given to you, Cook, and they have been thrown away.”

Cook was also sentenced to three months in prison for two shop thefts and a further nine months for breaching a community order, all of which he admitted and will run concurrently.

2 and a half years is still about half what I think he should get, but it is a step in the right direction. No doubt some crazy left-wingers will be saying it's too harsh.

Now if only we can introduce a bread and water policy to the jails, or worse, get Southend Hospital to provide them with their food.

Agreed, you are definitely "a better criminal" than me...because I'm not one you low life scum!

Alas, you'll never be a better human being, as I am distinctly proud to be a law abiding and responsible citizen, who makes a positive contribution to society…who sleeps contently in bed every night with a clear conscience and no fear of a knock on the door from the boys in blue (that’s the police by the way…not Chelsea F.C.)!

Pity you don’t spend some of your ill gotten gains on some literacy lessons!

How embarrassing to post such text, strewn with grammatical errors!

I guess you bunked crucial English lessons during your formative years and as a consequence, cannot find legitimate employment today!

Bullied at school? I don't think so. I'm a big strong lad. Work out at the gym most days, 6ft 2 and 14.5 stone, and a former boxer for my local club. Yeah I got picked on of course... I know what it's like to achieve something. I won 4 medals for my local athletics club too a few years back. Thats why i dont appear as a scumbag because im superfit and dont drink and do drugs. Only reason I would class myself as a 'criminal' is because I smashed a guys head in at a night club in London 3 years ago and nearly killed him because he touched my girlfriend. Got 8 months imprisonment serving half. Apart from that, I think I'm just your average citizen. Doing a bit of this and bit of that of course ;)

Oh dear, the truth hurts doesn't it?! Wasn't it George Bernard Shaw (who? I hear you cry!) who said 'humanity cannot deal with reality'?

Your English is letting you down once again Dimwit! Stop depriving a village somewhere of their idiot!

"Your hard"...should be ' you're hard'! "Your a 1 punch clown...", should be 'you're' again!

And another, "Your be on the floor"...should read 'You'll be on the floor'!

I'd fight you, anytime, any place, anywhere, but alas I'm working at the moment, making an honest living! Furthermore, if we did make a date, you'd probably miss the duel...since I doubt if you can even tell the time!

Enjoy the afternoon on your sofa F**kwit and maybe reflect on why you're actually there...without blaming anyone else, but yourself!

Man-up and take responsibility...you know it makes sense, mummy's little soldier!

“Luxury things”? KFC, a Ford Escort and a fake Rolex are not luxury things you clueless reprobate ! Get a job, get a life…and get out of mine![/p]
Nothing wrong with my English atall you fool. You seemed to be able to read my previous post properly otherwise you wouldn't of responded with your angry message. You see your just pi55ed off that you can't make money like me and have to work. Like I said in my previous post, I'm pretty sophisticated and don't appear like a scum bag. I can fool alot of people. Contribution to society? What does society do for you? Nothing. Just drain you out of money through your taxes. Please respond again mr do-gooder. I enjoy these little arguments sitting on my comfy sofa.[/p]
"Atall", "alot"...what language is that...Serbo-Croat?! Mister (mr) with a small 'm'...no wonder you got bullied at school! Find a job that you love (like me) and you'll never have to work again! Sadly, the cryptic message within this sentence will pass over the head of the likes of you! “Don’t appear like a scum bag. I can fool a lot of people”… don’t you see this phrasing is an admission of what you are actually attempting to deny?! Thankfully, ‘Society’, has given me opportunity…which I have grasped with both hands, unlike some…mentioning no names! Do you know what it’s like to have aspirations and actually achieve them? Have you ever achieved anything? If so what…or is this opportunity to converse with someone with superior wit, intellect and charisma, albeit a humbling experience, the highlight of your miserable life?[/p]
Doing a bit of this and bit of that of course ;)[/p]
Thank you sooo much, you've inspired me to write a comedy character based on your life! I can see him now, a simpleton, meat-head type 'Biffa Bacon' creation, who wouldn't look out of place in 'Little Britain' alongside the only gay in the village and Vicky Pollard! You mouth-breather you![/p]
Shall we have a fight? Thinking your hard on your keyboard. Your a 1 punch clown mate. Your be on the floor in no time.[/p]
