Elderly couple hurt in roundabout crash

Basildon Recorder: Emergency response – firefighters at the scene Emergency response – firefighters at the scene

AN ELDERLY couple had to be rescued from their car after it crashed and flipped on to its roof on a roundabout at a busy retail park.

Police, paramedics and firefighters rushed to Mayflower Retail Park, Basildon, yesterday morning after the blue Kia Cerato ploughed on to the roundabout.

It is thought the 79-year-old driver had turned off the A127 to enter the retail park, at Gardiners Link, just after 11.20am, when the accident happened.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the car on its roof in the middle of the roundabout, near to the KFC restaurant and drivethrough.

Two crews from Basildon fire station had to use specialist equipment to cut the roof off the car to free the driver and his 81- year-old wife, who were left shaken by the incident.

The couple, who are from Basildon, were placed on to spinal boards and fitted with neck collars, but were not seriously injured. They were treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Basildon Hospital.

They remained at hospital yesterday evening while tests and X-rays were carried out.

Rapid Response Paramedic, Barry Withers, who was first on the scene, said: “This incident really could have been much more serious than fortunately, was the case.

“It’s terrific that the care my colleagues and I were able to provide was enhanced greatly by the teamwork between us, the fire brigade and the police.”

A spokeswoman for Essex Police said no other vehicle was involved in the incident.

I work around this area, and only have half an hour for lunch and there is nothing more frustrating than being stuck behind elderly people during the lunch time rush! Most of you have all day to do your shopping, try not to come out during our lunch time!!

What a sad person you are, GreenRabbit. People getting in your way. Getting stuck behind a pensioner. What a sad life you must have with all this happening at lunch time. I don't know how old you are. Probably in your mid twenties I would guess. You probably have a mum and dad, and Nans and Granddads. Is your attitude towards them as bad as it is towards the other older people going about their day? Get a life. They have as much right to do what they want as you do. They have ALL done their work time while you were being a pain in the arse to your mum and dad. GROW UP YOU PLONKER.

Don't listen to bazza1 I agree. They are slow, annoying, and not to mention have poor eye sight and hearing. Once you get past 70, regardless if your able or not, you should automatically have your licence revoked.

I am guessing that every downvote here is from the likes of people i am talking about! Yes i do have a family and my grandparents are considerate enough to do their shopping outside of the busy periods! Nothign against old people, they just have all the time in the world to do their shopping and surely its less stressful for them to go at a time when they havent got manic workers rushing about them!

And people could generalise and say every under 25 year old is a nuisance on the road through speeding and cutting in and out and undertaking instead of overtaking and because of their limited driving experience cannot think ahead. Could be said they are all excessive speeding timebombs.

But people with some sense could say there are good and bad drivers in all age groups and if there are speed limits on the roads its no point impatient drivers driving right up the person in front's arse
