£50k facelift in store for Wickford High Street shops

Basildon Recorder: £50k facelift in store for Wickford High Street shops £50k facelift in store for Wickford High Street shops

A TIRED shopping parade in WickfordHigh Street is in line for a major facelift.

Basildon Council is to spend thousands of pounds revamping Halls Corner – at the junction of London Road – to attract more shoppers and independent businesses.

The ambitious scheme will see up to £5,000 spent revitalising each shop front.

About a dozen businesses are thought to be taking part in the project, which is aimed at helping the High Street compete with out-of-town retailers.

Lynne Doyle, who owns fancy dress and balloons shop, It’s My Party, welcomed the scheme and said the main shopping area was in need of a facelift.

She said: “I’m hoping the council’s shopfront scheme will help the independent shopkeepers in this town.

“They all need things like this to make sure they survive and thrive against the bigger chains.

“Car parking is also an issue for shoppers here, so I hope the proposed newshort-stay parking bays will lead to quicker and easier collection of purchases and encourage potential new customers.

“I certainly approve of the designs Basildon Council has proposed.

“They’ll bring some character to the High Street, which should attract new visitors.”

The council will pay for 90 per cent of the improvement costs, with traders and landlords being asked to pay the remaining ten per cent, of no more than £500.

The shopfronts scheme will run alongside other proposed improvements, as part of a wider regeneration of Wickford.

These include changes to the road layout, allowing the market to relocate, a new town square, and new paving and street furniture.

Tony Ball, Basildon Council leader and ward member for Wickford North, said: “All these improvements will make a visible difference to the feel of the town, enhance the general area and provide a much-needed boost for its local businesses.”

What a waste of money, not many decent shops there anyway, high parking fees, drive people elsewhere

Pointless, until Wickford has has some Larger units, it doesn't matter what you do to it. Wickford needs something to attract people in. Co-op is a rip off so many avoid it, there's no where to buy genuine electrical, phones and computers. The Market is Pointless, why can't it be done up like Pitsea's and allow a Carboot on a Sunday and Bank Holidays. 4 minutes and you could of finished your shopping in Wickford. 50k? might as well not bother. You can dress it up like you want, but you won't hide its problems. Wickford is Basildons cash cow and always will be.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Don't spend money and everybody moans; do spend money and they still moan.

Good luck to them. It needs tarting up but I do agree about the market. And yes Wickford does need bigger units and regeneration. It still retains the feel of a market town but this has not been exploited properly.

Maybe an injection of cash might just be the incentive they need.

Paint the Town with 90% of taxpayers money!!. What a win for private landlords and shop owners. Taxpayers are not an open wallet for the responsibilities that come with businesses and business premises. Can i have a 90 % grant to tart up my house. I think not.

Hi

I had the same concerns so I wrote to the wickford action group and the council...

The market is being revamped, yes moved off of the site behing the 99p shop to make way for a dr's surgery but the alley betwee the shops is being done up for a perminant home, with the market like last weekends happening on a regular basis where they shut the high street hopefully we will poach the people on the waiting list for rayleigh pitches.. A car boot on a sunday was started last month, however I don't think it was advertised very will in my opionon.

its all on the council website... Sainsburys are ending the lease with the co-op next year and moving in themselves
