A VOLUNTEER-RUN community cafe has been awarded an impressive five star hygiene rating.

The Poppy Pavilion Memorial Park Cafe, in Wickford Memorial Park, Rettendon View, was awarded the highest possible rating by environmental health officers at Basildon Council.

Councillor Terri Sargent, cabinet member for environment and community, said: “Congratulations to Poppy Pavilion Memorial Park Cafe on this fantastic food safety rating. It is all down to the hardworking volunteers who take pride in giving up their time to serve the people of Wickford.

“The cafe is looking for more volunteers and would love to hear from local people who are passionate about helping others. Full training is also available.”

The cafe is open from 9.30am until 4.30pm every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and acts as a training centre for local young people wanting to gain work experience, learn new skills and work towards qualifications.

Volunteers run a job club every Friday morning, where jobseekers can get help with CV writing, filling in job applications and interview techniques.

The cafe is to run a free cuppa scheme throughout October in a bid to encourage residents to use the facility.
