Unlicensed tattoo artists are working illegally from their own homes, according to reports received by Basildon Council.

Environmental health officers are reminding residents of the importance of only using registered tattooists.

All tattooists, skin piercers, semi-permanent make-up artists and accupuncturists working within the borough must be registered with the council.

Checks are carried out to ensure staff are properly trained and operate in clean conditions to reduce the risk of infections, such as HIV, septicaemia and hepatitis.

Unlicensed artists in Basildon have been advertising their services online.

Richard Moore, councillor responsible for licensing, said: “Even though tattoos have become very popular in recent years it is vital people do not put themselves at risk.

"Our advice is, always ask to see a copy of their registration certificate from the council to show that they working legally and have met safety standards.”

An unregistered tattooist or skin piercer faces a fine of up to £1,000 from the courts.
