A FAMILY have been honoured for their devotion to community projects in their area.

Husband and wife Pamela and John Mackay, and their daughter Gemma, were presented with the Essex Police Cup at the High Sheriff’s Awards.

The family have helped reduce antisocial behaviour and boost community safety through initiatives in the Lee Chapel North area of Basildon.

Three major projects have been set up in the community by the trio.

The Lee North Holiday Club provides opportunities for youngsters to take part in structured activities during the school holidays, reducing the chances of antisocial behaviour.

The Diamond Club, for over fifties, was set up three years ago by Pam and supports people who have lost confidence and are afraid of going out alone.

John and Pam have also set up the Helping Hands Community Group for jobseekers, which also provides a food bank service.

Pam said: “We really weren’t expecting the award, it was a great surprise.

“We have been in Basildon for 20 years and after we got involved in one community event it just grew from there.

“We’re busy all the time, but putting something into the community does mean we get something back, and that is happiness.”

Gemma combines a full-time retail job with running the youth club, which has 1,400 children on its books.

She said: “My philosophy is this; if I can put a smile on one child’s face then it makes it all worthwhile.”

The family was nominated by Basildon Council community development officer Michelle Fairchild.

She said: “Pam, John and Gemma are an inspiration in the community and they all work extremely hard with the clubs they run.

“They are passionate about their community and will always go the extra mile.”

The McKay family joined 43 voluntary and community organisations at an award ceremony at Hylands House, Chelmsford.
