CELTIC take on the superstars of AC Milan tonight in the San Siro in a Champions League last 16 match.

The Hoops won the European Cup in 1967 in Lisbon against AC's city rivals, Inter.

But NORRIE P (Giffnock) asks - Of the Lisbon Lions, who was the first to break up' the European Cup-winning side; ie. who was first to leave after 1967? Where did they go? THE first Lion to leave was that wonderful goalkeeper, Ronnie Simpson, but he didn't go' anywhere... he retired in 1970.

ORNUM (Erskine) - Have you any record of a goalkeeper named Grassie, who played in the late 1940s or early 50s? What team did he play for and was he a Scottish Cup Finalist? Was he a fireman who perished in the great Glasgow Cheapside disaster of March 28, 1960? A memorial plaque at Cowcaddens includes one Alexander Allan Grassie. WE can't find a goalie called Grassie playing in the Scottish Cup Final.

However, in 1940 James Grassie kept goal for Maryhill in the Scottish Junior Cup Final.

Maryhill defeated Morton Juniors 1-0 to lift the trophy. In 1944 a James Grassie also played in the Junior Cup Final for Blantyre, when the Vics lost 1-0 to Glasgow Perthshire.

It seems likely that this is the same player. Unfortunately our records do not cover the story of the Cheapside disaster, but the fireman that you mention on the plaque has a different first name from the goalkeeper who played in those Junior Cup Finals.

Alex Hastings (Gorgie) - I seem to remember a Scotland match against The Scottish League in the late 1950s, in which Tommy Younger saved a penalty. Can you confirm this? The match you are thinking about was played at Easter Road on February 3, 1958, as a trial for the forthcoming World Cup in Sweden. The Scotland XI won 3-2 and, as you say, Tommy Younger saved a penalty taken by Dave Mackay in the 62nd minute.

A minute later, Stuart Imlach scored the winner. Murdie and Currie scored Scotland's other goals while Murray and Young replied for the League.

A crowd of 45,436 watched the match which was a record for a floodlit match in Edinburgh. Teams: Scotland: Younger (Liverpool), Parker (Falkirk), Caldow (Rangers), Docherty (Preston), Howie (Charlton), Cowie (Dundee), Scott (Rangers), Currie (Clyde), Murdie (Blackpool), Baird (Rangers), Imlach (Notts Forest).

Scottish League: Brown (Dundee), Kerr (Partick), McIntosh (Falkirk), McColl (Rangers), Evans (Celtic), Mackay (Hearts), Collins (Celtic), Murray, Young, Wardhaugh (all Hearts), Matthew (East Fife). Sellout at Tannadice

Cox's Pippin (via email to sport@eveningtimes.co.uk) When Dundee won the league in 1962 did their match with Dundee United attract a crowd of over 50,000? With three games remaining, the teams met at Tannadice with Dundee winning 2-1. Almost 55,000 tickets were sold for the match and it was estimated that about 50,000 actually attended. Sandy was a Rangers hairo

BILLY RAE (Bridgeton) - Settle a pub argument please. Can you confirm that Sandy Jardine's Christian name is not Alexander? Correct. His full name is William Pullar Jardine. He was nicknamed Sandy because of the colour of his hair. He joined Rangers from Edinburgh Athletic and gave great service to the Ibrox side before moving to Hearts. In a fine career, he was capped 38 times for Scotland.

STEPHEN MORRIS (Clydebank) - I heard John Aldridge of Liverpool was the first player to miss a penalty kick in an English FA Cup Final, but I reckon it was a player called Wallace. Can you please clarify? When Aldridge's penalty was saved by Dave Beasant of Wimbledon in the 1988 Final, he became the first player to miss a spot kick in a Wembley final, which contributed to the Dons' shock 1-0 victory.

The first player to miss in any FA Cup Final was Charlie Wallace, of Aston Villa, against Sunderland in the 1913 Final played at the old Crystal Palace. He made amends with the 75th minute corner for Tommy Barker to head Villa's winning goal.
