A GROUP of budding golfers took part in a 72 hole challenge in the pouring rain to raise money for Macmillan.

Paul Baker, 45, of Hockley and five of his best friends decided to put their love of golf and desire to fundraise for Macmillan cancer together and raised £7,500 in their hallenge.

The group played non-stop for 12 hours at Ballards Gore golf course, Canewdon.

Mr Baker said: “We were compelled to react to the sad news that the wife of a close friend of our community group has been diagnosed with a form of accelerated cancer.

“We all play golf together and agreed that the Macmillan Longest golf day challenge over 72 holes was a good fit for us as a group both in terms of sporting challenge and would directly help to raise awareness and support for the cause close to our friends.”

As well as Mr Baker, the five others that took part, all from Hockley, were Gary Toomey, 52, Brad Wheeler, 45, Gary Treen, 45, Paul Peacham, 45 and Barry Hudson, 49.

Mr Baker continued: “First tee off was at 4:11am in the rain, which got progressively worse as the morning passed and didn’t stop for over 12 hours.

“We all came in after 36 holes for a shower and change into dry clothes.

“We covered approximately 42k and 35k was played in the rain!

“Best part was walking down the 72nd hole to be greeted by our friend whose wife is receiving treatment with a big thanks – and a cold beer.
