FIREFIGHTERS are warning people to be careful with phone chargers after attending a fire in a kitchen in Essex.

Two crews attended an address in Colne Road, Halstead, shortly after noon today.

With an increase in the number of devices in our homes, firefighters are warning people to make sure they are aware of the risks.

Station officer Stephen Byrne said: “The socket started sparking as soon as the charger was plugged in. Luckily the fuse tripped and the fire self-extinguished.

“We remained at the incident scene and only left once we were confident it was safe.

“The occupier told crew members that she normally has the same charger plugged in behind her bed at night. This incident could have easily of happened at night when she was sleeping.”

Essex Fire and Rescue Service has issued the following advice:

  • Never leave your electrical devices charging overnight. Charge phones, tablets, laptops and e-cigarettes while you are in the room and turn them off when you leave the room.
  • Don’t leave devices charging on the carpet or under a pillow.
  • Make sure that e-cigarettes are bought from a reputable source and are used and charged in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Keep electrical items away from flammable materials when charging.
  • Don't overload sockets - power strip extension leads are safest, but can only take a total of 13 amps.
