A GOOD day's sailing was had by those taking part in an annual barge match.

Seven London barges took part in the 53rd Southend Barge Match on Sunday in three classes.

The bowsprit class was won by Xylonite, with Majorie second and Adieu third.

Niagara took the fast staysail class with Melissa second.

Lady of the Lea pipped Defiance to take the slow stay sail class.

Xylonite also took the fastest start and beast seamanship awards, with Niagara the fastest to the outer mark.

David Renouf, organiser, said: "We are extremely pleased with the way things turned out.

"We had a good strong breeze and the barges got round the course in a reasonable speed without any hiccoughs.

"There were lots of people watching an the exhibition we were running was also very busy."

Town mayor Judith McMahon helped with the start of the races and presented the prizes at the Navy and Military Club, in Royal Terrace.
