A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl had to be airlifted to hospital with a serious head injury after being hit by a car outside a school.
The incident happened on Ferry Road, Hullbridge shortly before 8.30am yesterday.
A residents group said the speed limit on the road should have been lowered years ago with too many speeding cars.
A Police spokesman said: “A six-year-old girl from the Thurrock area was struck by a black Mercedes in Ferry Road.
“She was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital with serious injuries.
The ambulance service were called at 8.41am yesterday morning to reports of an incident involving a pedestrian and a car.
An ambulance spokesman said: “The girl was treated for a head injury and has been airlifted to Royal London Hospital for further treatment.
“Her condition is believed to be serious but not life threatening.”
Brian Carleton, the chairman of Hullbridge Residents association said the road was dangerous.
He said: “Lots of people have asked for the speed limit to be dropped. More than a year ago, Councillor Michael Hoy talked about lowering the limit from 30mph to 20mph.
“They only take notice after an accident, it should have been lowered years ago. Speeding is a big problem down that road - it is less than a mile long and we still have hooligans rushing up it.
“I’ll be writing to Highways and the council to ask why they haven’t done anything.”
The young girl injured in the collision was attending Riverside Primary School in Hullbridge. The head teacher, Andy Douglas, said: “We were sorry to hear about the incident outside the school this morning.
“Fortunately the child did not sustain any serious injuries and the family are hopeful that she will be back home tonight or tomorrow. Our thoughts remain with them and we wish the child a full and quick recovery.
“Support has been given to pupils and will continue to be available to them and any affected families in the coming weeks.
“I would like to thank my staff for the prompt and professional way they acted to support the child’s family and friends and to Rochford Extended Services for their quick response and offer of ongoing support.”
Police investigations in to the collision are on-going.
