PARENTS are fighting for safety measures to be introduced in a Westcliff road they fear is dangerous for their children.

A petition, which has more than 100 signatures already, has been started about Hornby Avenue, in Westcliff, as parents voice concern over cars speeding down the road.

Mum-of-two Danielle Lambert, from Rochford Road, in Westcliff started the petition because she believes there is nothing in place to stop speeding cars.

The 27-year-old said: “For the past few years there have been cars speeding down the road. There is nothing to stop them, no one adheres to the speed limit.

“It is a good idea to get some kind of calming measure for the children because there is a primary school - Prince Avenue Primary School - on the road, who agree there is a need for calming measures.

“Something really does need to be done. There has been a lot of damage to cars and near misses, I have seen cars going 60mph on that road.

“It is also used as a cut through route for the A127 which is fine if it is used correctly. Speed bumps would be the best option.

Nickki Blackburn, from Rochford Road, said: “My son goes to the school and next year he will be in his last year and wants to start walking on his own but I am petrified about letting him because people speed down there so fast.

“I was parked on Hornby Avenue yesterday and cars drove past so fast that they actually shook my car.

“It is so easy for someone to get hit, it is scary to think about but that is why we have to do something.

“If speed bumps were introduced it might make people think twice about using it as a cut through but also force them to drive slower.”

Southend Councillor Mark Flewitt said they would consider some kind of safety measure but not speed bumps.

The St Laurence ward councillor said: “Speed bumps can cause far more damage in an accident, I would not recommend them on that road, it is very residential.

“We would consider some kind of safety measures but not speed bumps. A lower speed limit on the road would be far safer.

“The residents should come come talk to us so we can help advise them.”
