A DECISION on the future of 31 Essex post offices will be made in the next month.

The official 12-week consultation period on the closure plans has now ended.

Post office officials will consider local views before making a final decision on the Essex sub post offices earmarked for closure.

The proposals are part of a nationwide closure programme involving more than 2,500 urban post offices, announced in October.

Among those being considered for closure are the Kings Parade branch in Nevendon Road, Wickford, the Sunnymede post office in Greens Farm, Billericay, and the branch in the Chase, Rayleigh.

Lord Hanningfield, Stock Tory county councillor and leader of Essex County Council, said: "We have been calling for an extension so all options and avenues can be fully explored before these vital lifelines are lost for ever.

"Sadly, it appears our plea has fallen on deaf ears."

And what's the betting the post office will go ahead and do exactly what it wants to do ignoring all local objections?
