Southend's iconic Christmas switch-on event will be returning this year for the first time since 2019.

Southend BID has announced its festive event is back after it sadly lost its streak in 2020 due to lockdown restrictions.

Meanwhile, in 2021 alternative events were held as bosses followed government guidelines.

Now, the BIG Christmas Switch-On will be back in full force on November 19.

The main stage will host performances from community groups such as The Afro Caribbean Society, traditional Chinese lion dancers, and more.

Meanwhile, The Music Man Project will lead crowds in a Christmas sing-along, prior to the official switch-on at 6pm.

An artist stage will also be located in Royal Square, to showcase more of Southend‘s talent, while an artisan Christmas craft market will be held outside Southend's new art and culture community centre, The IronWorks.

Community groups, choirs, schools, and performing arts clubs have been invited to join in the fun, delivering varied performances throughout the day.

The IronWorks will also be sponsoring designated busking spots, where artists will be performing from the switch-on event until Christmas Eve.

Buskers will be located at Metro Bank, under the bridge, and in the Royals Alcove.

Finally, Southend BID will be setting up ‘Elfie Stations’ in participating businesses, creating a trail for all the family.

At each station, visitors will participate in an activity, such as hat-making, to ultimately become an elf. Their prize will be a visit to see Father Christmas.

The night will end with a fantastic firework display.

The official timeline for this event includes the artisan market from 9am, activities start at 12pm, the switch-on at 6pm with the finale fireworks from 7.30pm.

Signing off this festive announcement, BID manager Ashley Oglina-Beecham said: “All of us at the BID are overjoyed to announce the return of the Christmas Switch-On and we can’t wait to celebrate the festive season with our wonderful community.

“We’ll see you there.”

Southend BID is also calling for any performers, traders, community groups, and schools who would like to take part in this event to contact organisers.

They are hoping to celebrate as many members of the community as possible.
