Yuck! This milk went off before I was born

A MUM has raised concerns after a carton of milk formula she bought for her newborn son turned out to be three months past its sell-by date.

Adrienne Bishop, 30, of Clarence Road, Rayleigh, bought the carton of SMA baby milk from Toys R Us, in Basildon shopping centre.

She fed it to her eight-week-old son, Jack, and he suffered a bout of diarrhoea soon afterwards.

The new mum was not too concerned until she checked the sell-by date as she went to throw away the milk carton – and saw to her horror it was April 10, 2009.

She said: “That means it went out of date before Jack was even born. I couldn’t believe it when I read the date.

“I could understand if it had been even a month past its sell-by date, as obviously things can be overlooked sometimes, but three months is ridiculous.

“Luckily he just had a bad tummy and has since recovered, but it’s a bit worrying. I am ever so careful to sterilise everything for Jack, then a big chain sells me baby milk which has gone off.”

Toys R Us spokesman Mark Jones was extremely apologetic, and found it hard to believe the store’s staff missed the out-of date carton.

He said: “We are a reputable toy and baby retailer, and have sold this type of product for nearly 20 years.

“We carry out stringent checks every week to ensure this type of incident doesn’t happen.

“This is a very, very rare complaint, and clearly we would like to apologise to the customer for any distress caused.”

Surely you would have checked the sell by date yourself if you "are careful enough to sterilise everything" for your baby?

I really had no idea that Toys R Us sold baby food. One lives and learns.

I didn't either, I don't like supermarkets but in case of these type of products you know they have a high turnover so are likely to be fresher

All she had to do was take it back.
It's hardly headline news.
As this woman is 30 yrs old, you think she would have the sense to have checked the sell-by date.

My wife checks the date on everything when we go shopping.

Why should she have checked the sell by date??
You shouldnt have to check, the stores should be on top of things like this!
We put our trust in these places to not make our families ill,
How long would it take to shop each week if we stood there checking the date on every item we put in our trolleys!

About another five minutes. You don't need to check the date on all items.

Frosty Angel-Why should you check the date?- Simple if you are buying a product then you want to make sure its Ok to buy! Shops do have stringent checks in place (certainly the big boys inc Toys R Us) but things slip through the net so its always worth checking. I don't know why you would go to the paper though its an out of date product - go back to the shop instead.

Fair point but what im saying is, we shouldnt have to check, the stores should make 100% sure of what we buy from them is safe, i agree with the going through the paper part, i have a baby & i know if he was made ill like that then id kick up a big stink with the store & proper channels

It's a lot easier to feed your child a load of out of date **** and risk them being ill, that way you get a nice little 'compo' payout.

Why can't people use the sense they were born with!!

Why would anyone buy milk for their baby from a toy store?

Obviously (to most people) it is not necessary to check the date on all items.

Only perishable food items.

I'm Jack's dad, and just wanted to respond to some of the more cynical comments.
Clearly in retrospect it would have been a good idea to check the sell-by date. But can everyone honestly say they check the date on all items they have just bought? We obviously would have done so if it had been sitting in our kitchen for some time, but wrongly trusted an international chain to ensure their stock was in date. We obviously won't make that mistake again.
As to the suggestion we are after compensation, I can assure you we are not. We have neither asked for or been offered compensation. Jack is fine and that is all that matters to us.
we are just concerned that Toys R Us tighten up their procedures.

Aren't we a bunch of miserable, cynical and negative people?
LOL

Whinge, whine, bitc7 and complain.

Glad to hear Jack is okay. I hope Toys R Us has learned from this.

I must say that if I had children, it would never occur to me to buy baby food at a toy shop.

First of all, it’s not like Jack’s mother bought fresh produce she bought formula which should be the same whether or not you buy it at Toys r us or the grocery store. She is not a bad mother for not noticing the sell by date. That’s a huge stretch. Who it happened too is not the point. It wouldn’t hurt any vendor to play closer attention to their sell by dates. Baby Jack is also ridiculously cute. I’m glad he’s feeling better.
