Standing up for all the victims and survivors of domestic abuse

VICTIMS of abuse took part in a walk through Basildon town centre to help launch Domestic Abuse Awareness Week.

The parade began at the Mother and Child fountain at noon on Monday, in celebration of those who have survived domestic abuse, but also in remembrance of the 100 victims who die every year throughout the country, from the crime.

Walkers included survivors of domestic abuse, members of Basildon’s Domestic Abuse Panel and other council-run organisations.

Elaine Arnold, chairman of Basildon domestic abuse panel and services manager of Basildon Women’s Aid, said: “The walk was an excellent way to launch the week of events. Raising awareness of the issues surrounding domestic abuse is paramount in the fight against it.

“The solidarity shown by the walkers today demonstrates a commitment to preventing all types of abuse wherever possible.” An information stand has been set up in the Basildon Centre, in St Martin’s Square, encouraging everyone to wear a white ribbon to demonstrate their support in the fight against domestic abuse
