Keep-fit fans play Santa

A LADIES’ only fitness group has been hoarding Christmas goodies for mums and children in need.

Members of Curves played Santa, by giving toys and gifts to the Basildon Women’s Refuge for a second year running.

The club, based in Grover Walk, Corring-ham, has supported the refuge by organising a host of events.

Throughout the year they’ve donated 22 stones of food to the refuge, and in September staff and members attended the Children’s Charity Ball at Orsett Hall, helping to raise £29,000.

Since mid-November, members have been donating toiletries, clothes, and household goods, as well as buying presents for the children in time for Christmas.

Club manager Laura Swaby said “This is such a wonderful charity to support as we are women supporting women.

“The stories the refuge has told us about some of the horrors these women and their children have been through always bring a tear to the eye, and you realise how grateful you are for what you have got.

“Our members are always so very giving and are always asking us when are we collecting for the refuge again. We cannot thank them enough for their continued generosity.”

The refuge opened in 1977, and provides comfort to women and their children who have been victims of domestic violence, which may be physical, mental or sexual.
