Since cycle lanes have been constructed in Southend it would seem their use would be less likely to cause danger to pedestrians, yet some bikers still insist on using the pavements of the town for riding on.
I recently witnessed an incident in London Road when a woman was nearly knocked down from behind by a cyclist. The cyclist stopped for an instant then sped on his way, leaving the woman still in a state of shock.
There is no way a pedestrian is able to move out of the way when this kind of activity occurs. Not only bicycles, but vehicles being driven along pavements can cause a serious accident.
Pedestrians should have the right of way and not be forced to walk in the road or be hit from a passing vehicle, often from behind and unseen. A proper solution needs to be worked out.
Of course young children are safer riding their bikes on pavements. If compromises are to be made a code of conduct must be implemented or the law as it stands must be enforced.
