I applaud the diligence of Father Tom Codling in exposing a sham marriage.
This is a problem that is not confined to the Thurrock area as it is becoming an increasing problem to Basildon clergy.
My own church has married non EEC members to those with EEC membership in the past couple of years. Priests are at a loss on how to stop such marriages after a certificate has been granted by the Diocesan Registrar.
The fact that many are applied for in haste should set alarm bells ringing.
The solution is easy. All non EEC residents who apply to legitimise their status in the EU by marrying an EU citizen should have their details passed to the UK border agency.
Only after they are satisfied should the diocese issue a certificate.
