FLAMES shot up through the pavement as an electrical explosion hit a Southend street.
Stunned workers and passers-by watched as 6ft high flames soared up the window of beauty salon P.O.S.H, in Queen’s Road, at about 5pm yesterday.
Witnesses said they heard a loud bang before seeing the flames burst out of the pavement, throwing out debris and scorching the side of the building.
A spokeswoman for UK Power Networks said: “We were called following a suspected fault on an underground cable.
“It is likely some disruptions are necessary while engineers work on the fault.
“We are sorry for any disruption this has caused people.”
