A FORMER police chief has put pen to paper and published his first novel.

However, Michael Benning, 63, who served with Essex Police for 31 years, has not written a detective novel or a crime fiction.

The first-time author, who was Southend police’s chief supt until he retired in 2000, has penned a travelogue diary of his visit to the paradise island of Grand Cayman, for his friend’s wedding.

As the friend, schoolteacher Melanie Wright prepares for her special day, the book, called Island Joggings, details Michael’s exploits on the Carribean island, including how not to play golf and the various types of rum cake he samples.

Some policing anecdotes are also thrown in for good measure.

Michael, who also served in Wickford, Basildon and Grays during his time as a police officer, said even he was surprised the musings he jotted down while on holiday were in print.

He said: “This is my first attempt at published writing and I hope people enjoy it.

“The book really started as just a few jottings on holiday and was never intended to be a book.

“However, against my better judgement, I was persuaded to transpose the notes into a book, which allows everyone to read about my jogging around Grand Cayman in a sweat.”

Michael, a keen runner who has completed 13 marathons, was also involved in all police operations concerning hijackings at Stansted airport during his time on the force.

He received the Queen’s Police Medal in 2000 when he retired.

Michael, who lives in South Woodham Ferrers, will be signing the book today, at the Essex Book Festival in Chelmsford. He added: “I want to let others share in my enjoyment of the islands, as well as my passion for writing.”

Michael will also be signing his book at Waterstones, in Southend High Street, on Saturday, March 19, from noon, and at WH Smith, in Wickford High Street, on Saturday, April 30, from noon.
