A MALE pedestrian has been transferred to a London hospital after sustaining multiple injuries in a two car smash in Wickford.

The accident happened shortly after 10.15 on Friday morning at the junction of Hill Avenue on the A129 Southend Road when one car collided with another near the mini roundabout at the junction.

The 66-year-old man, who was walking on the pavement, was rushed to Basildon Hospital with multiple injuries before being transferred to the Royal London Hospital later that day. He is currently in a critical but stable condition.

Police at the scene directed traffic away from the area with Southend Road being closed in both directions at the junction with Hill Avenue for five hours. Traffic at the time stretched back onto the A132 and the roundabout linking Golden Jubilee Way and Runwell.

Police are carrying out an investigation and are appealing for witnesses or anyone who has details which led to the accident to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101.
