A MAN was set upon by a gang of thugs as he walked through Basildon.

Police are treating the attack, which happened outside the Big Q shops in Whitmore Way, as unprovoked.

The 36-year-old victim, from Basildon, was left with severe cuts and bruises to his face and shoulders. He was taken to Basildon Hospital.

Investigating Officer, Pc David St John, said: "This assault caused the man to lose consciousness and memory of the event. Nothing was stolen from him so it makes the incident even more disturbing and confusing. We have had some witnesses to the event come forward, but none can offer any descriptions on the assailants. We know there were others in the area who have yet to come forward. We would urge them to do so.”

Anyone with information in connection with this assault, which happened at 1am on Saturday, October 13, is urged to contact investigating officers at Basildon police station on 101.
