Benefit cheat jailed

A BENEFIT fraudster, who falsely claimed £15,000 in benefits despite having thousands in the bank, has been jailed.

Paul Taylor, 52, of Byfletts, Basildon had £16,000 in the bank but failed to tell Basildon Council.

Taylor admitted the fraud and was jailed for eight weeks.

Rather than jail him, take his money off him to pay back the £15k and make him do community service. Jailing him is a waste of tax payers money.

..especially when there are muggers, rapists, murderers etc. getting a slap on the wrist as there is no space in jail for them.

No fine him double the amount AND lock him up.
It's only a shame we can't make him stand on a roundabout wearing a 'I stole from you sign' for a month. Throw rotten fruit at him.

I will go to goal for 8 weeks if someone will allow me to swindle £15.000 from the public purse ... just under £200 per week has to be worth the risk!

Pensioners get less than that to live on for a whole year!

I hope they have emptied his bank account!

councils and DWP can check your bills bank accounts and credit cards etc,and do credit reference checks to see if anyone has applied for credit at your address.they can also watch you undercover and take film and pictures of you .they act on all tip offs as well.

if you want to hide your savings pull them out then get a friend to open an account at their address with you having an atm card or internet access.even then they probably would still snoop around.

No amnesty then, like there was for our glorious MPs, to pay the money back. Oh no if your joe bloggs on street its off jail. If it had been for his duck pond he would have been ok.

Easy target, only £15,000?
What about the ones who swindle upwards of £30,000 for years without getting caught?

Great idea - I would have suggested Vic Circus roundabout but..... Hang on! having said that the longer queues would mean drivers get to shout extra abuse!

8 weeks at £200 comes to a lot less than £15,000, more like 18 months, to be precise 75 weeks

8 weeks (out in 4) for 15k , not bad.

I wish we'd stop paying means-tested benefits altogether - it's a fraud's paradise. We should just pay every adult British citizen a flat Allowance every month that would replace benefits, low-income tax breaks and the Minimum Wage. The bureaucracy would be slashed as well as the fraud, people wouldn't be afraid to work for an _extra_ 100 quid every now and again (good for startups and small businesses) and it would act as a disincentive to visiting workers.

Great idea. Luckily we are awash with money and this will help put a small dent in the stockpile.

Surely he will have to pay it back?
