A13 traffic chaos after crane nearly hits bridge A13 traffic chaos after crane nearly hits bridge

TRAFFIC ground to a halt on the A13 yesterday afternoon after a crane working on a bridge nearly fell on to it.

Contractors were drilling near the junction of The Manorway at Stanford-le-Hope to put rods in to strengthen the bridge when the machinery was blown towards the bridge and landed on one of the vehicles.

Traffic was affected across south Essex as far as Sadlers Farm with long tailbacks after Essex Police closed part of the a13 in both directions.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said: “At 1.20pm we had reports of a crane leaning towards a bridge at the junction of the A13 and A1014 No traffic was allowed under the bridge and there was traffic chaos in both directions.”

It's not a crane, it's a drilling/piling rig and they were extremely lucky not to have caused a pile up on the A13 - no pun intended. I couldn't believe my eyes when I drove past it earlier. I hope all involved escaped without injury.

Are you sure this happened Saturday & not Sunday? I ask as I was held up in traffic in that area yesterday evening around 6.30pm.

Good point - this happened on Sunday - I got the email from the A13 Roadworks website telling me about the forced road closure and delays! I hit the traffic coming from South Hill and had to turn and go back through Horndon on the Hill!

So why is a story published on Sunday saying it happened yesterday, which would make is Saturday?

Come on Echo sort it out!

how come the lampposts are still up if it was wind that blew it over?REALLY this is a 70 ton Piling rig, They dont blow over!!!!! Look at the piling platform on which it was sat, the main contractor, rig driver and banksman are all to blame here!!!!
