Blundering nurse banned from practicing for a year Blundering nurse banned from practicing for a year

A FORMER Basildon Hospital nurse who left sick children unsupervised and failed to give medication to a baby with meningitis has been banned from practising for a year.

Titilola Orefuwa also left the room as a needle was being inserted into an infant's spine, meaning the procedure had to be repeated, causing the child stress and pain.

Ms Orefuwa was supposed to catch fluid from the baby while a registrar carried out a lumbar puncture on the patient, who was being held by a student nurse, but left the room as the needle was going in, a tribunal in central London heard.

Following last week's hearing, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) said the panel had considered striking Ms Orefuwa off but had decided the 12-month suspension more appropriate.

She admitted seven charges in total carried out while a staff nurse between January 2006 and April 2010.

Ms Orefuwa admitted refusing a request by a senior nurse to change wards, replying that she was "pissed off" and would go home instead. She is also said to have used the word "f***".

The nurse also admitted leaving a child who needed constant monitoring in the care of a hospital porter.

The child needed supervision as he was under sedation and was waiting for an MRI scan.

Ms Orefuwa also admitted failing to respond to a baby's monitor alarm after not looking after the patient properly during her shift.

Ms Orefuwa also admitted administering drugs through a drip and giving insulin to a patient on April 23 2010 while banned from administering medication.

She has 28 days to appeal over the decision.

Only a year suspension what a joke. PIN number should have been revoked and banned from working in the care sector. Is it any wonder that things keep going wrong, when we let this kind of person continue in the nursing profession.

The foreign nurses are trained completley different in their own country. Our nurse training is of a high standard but wherever country she got trained the overseas exams will not be up to the UK standards.

She should have been banned for life in this country from any kind of nursing and she wouldnt be fit to look after cockroaches.

This is an absolute disgrace. If anyone asked the parents of the children that suffered at the hands of this arrogant person then I am sure that a harsher punishment would have been dished out. The NMC panel should hang their heads in shame. What does anyone have to do to lose their registration in the NHS? I am guessing that murder might but that is debatable. No wonder Basildon Hospital is the laughing stock of the NHS.

I hope that after 12 months the powers to be monitors a name change or bogus documents if this evil individual applies to re-join the NHS.

Surely the fact that she was already banned from administering drugs (but still did so) would show that she has already been found guilty of previous accusations and has no interest, intention, and more importantly genuine care in carrying out her job with professionalism and compassion. I'd like to say what will it take to actually strike her off - but I think we all know the answer to that......

Human rights, the race relations board and do-gooders prevented this woman from getting a lifetime ban. Its nothing to do with her nationality and the colour of her skin its about the disgusting way she is doing her job. Problem is all the looney parties will back her case.

This was surely a case where she should have lost her PIN and never practiced again. Dangerous decision.

What the hell is wrong with the NMC. The bad practice and neglect offences listed in this article more than prove she should have been struck off the register and NEVER allowed to practice again in this country. She is an absolute disgrace to the nursing profession. What does the NMC think is going to happen in 12 months - a personaility transplant?
Her behaviour as reported shows her to be cruel, uncaring and negligent

Does the general public have 28 days to appeal the NMC decision to allow her to continue to practice after 12 months?

One year not enough how stupid. She should be abnned for life - and from being a Care Assistant too as she obviously does not have the aptitude nor attitude to be a nurse.

This woman shouldn't be allowed to work in the medical sector again. A year is not sufficient in this case.
