Dad died of heart failure at Basildon Hospital after angina pills stopped by medics
11:04am Friday 8th February 2013 in Echo News Exclusive By Jon Austin
Alan Hayes
A MAN died of heart failure just three days after medics at Basildon Hospital stopped his angina pills despite protests from his family.
Relatives of Alan Hayes, 72, now want his death investigated as part of the probe into the hospital, which is among five hospitals with the highest death rates in the country.
Mr Hayes, 72, died three days after staff stopped him taking beta blockers and statins which had controlled a long-term angina problem.
The Hayes family said they were even reassured in a morning phone call to the hospital that Alan was “fine” despite him already having suffered the heart attack.
Just hours later he was dead.
His son, David Hayes, 43, from Wilson Close, Stanford-le-Hope, said: “I welcome any outside inquiry that will get to the truth of how care like this has been allowed.
We thought about complaining at the time, but were still grieving and thought what good would it do.
Now that we know we are not alone we want this properly investigated in the inquiry.”
The family say the drugs had kept Alan’s heart problem under control and he had never had a heart attack before the one in hospital which killed him.
Alan was admitted on Friday, March 9 last year due to concerns about weight loss believed to have been caused by under eating due to the painful side effects of rheumatoid arthritis medication.
David said: “He was referred by the doctor in Orsett to Basildon and put on a drip, but they stopped all his medication.
Because he had angina we said he should not just come off the beta blockers and statins like that, but they were not concerned at all and said they needed to assess him for any other illnesses, so we just trusted them.”
The family called each morning to check on him and visited during the day.
Daughter Michelle Fogg, 37, said: “On Monday morning we called and were told he was fine.
When we went in to visit at 12pm he had a mask on his face and it was then they told us he had a heart attack in the night.
We believe that this only happened because they stopped his angina pills.” She said a patient in the next bed said Alan had complained through the night of chest pains, but nothing was done.
Alan was then moved to the Elizabeth Fry ward where he was left for more than three hours without a drip because they were awaiting his medical notes.
Mr Hayes added: “A doctor eventually came and tried to tell us right in front of dad that he was dying.
We asked him to tell us out of his earshot as it would panic him, but by the time we got back to the bed he was dead.” A hospital spokeswoman said: “The hospital strives to provide all of its patients with high quality safe care.
"We would encourage the family of Mr Hayes to contact the trust so we can investigate their concerns in full and establish whether there were any issues with their father’s treatment.”

I am sorry about the man who died. However, let us not be fooled by the motivation to print his story. It is part of a coordinated propaganda attcak by the Tory press. The purpose of which is to install in the minds of the public that the NHS is not fit of purpose and you, the public, should give up and turn to private health care. Hense the headlinds in todays Echo "HOSPITAL IS ROTTON - MP" That's Tory MP Jackie Doyle Price. And we all know the Tory's position with regard to the NHS.
All together now...'it woz der Freemasons and dat Fatcher wot dunnit'.

At the time we thought it would just be our word against the hospitals so didn't bother to complain about it.

Echo, do you really think it is fair that you print stories such as this when an investigation has not even taken place?
There may have been valid clinical reasons why this man's medication was stopped, but instead you print stories like this which will frighten people needing treatment at Basildon.
Shame on you.

I would like to say, that I have nothing but praise for Basildon Hospital. My Mother has just come home from there and is now on 24 hour oxygen. Basildon Hospital were fantastic. Her care, treatment and the investigations undertaken, were prompt and quickly reported and medication given swiftly. Also, the communication between the hospital and the community care service, was brilliant.
I thank you Basildon Hospital, your Doctors, Nurses and all staff.

It is the hospital that frightens people needing treatment at Basildon.
Lets be quite clear about that.

Left in excruciating pain for hours after a major operation, repeatedly asking for pain medication for hours on end, vital IV medication hours late, told to take the wrong medication and so much more, told that the record would show I had refused a medical procedure that was, by that time, an impossibility as I no longer had the body part as it had been removed surgically. I lived through this and can own my experience, sadly others have not survived. Given what I went through it doesn't come as surprise.

Hospitals and GP surgeries are now required by law to meet targets that throw any decent standard of care out of the window!
I attended another local hospital not so many miles away where a doctor couldn't be bothered to close the door as he discussed my care (or lack of it), where food is served on cardboard plates and where twice serious mistakes were made about my medication that could have had very serious consequences had I myself not picked up on the errors.
Raising issues need to made much easier and every issue raised needs a written response.
I am sure a patient at every hospital in the country can find fault, but it is this government that ruled patients get 10 minutes with a GP or 20 minutes with a hospital consultant ... regardless of your need! It is this government that introduced the mountains of paperwork they require to convince them a task had been done.
I can assure you that this hospital is no worse, if not much better than some I have attend in Essex!

Try attending a hospital in central Africa, makes Basildon a five star luxury.

So what is your point, other than saying
that people in England pay 10% tax (NI) to be taken care of in reasonable conditions in hospital. Whereas Africans who have paid doodlesquat come over to the UK and take full advantage of the "world health service". Aka NHS.

Why should a patient have to ask a doctor if he washed his hands? What level of care have we in our hospitals? The nurses used to learn their trade at the bedside and on the mop. Now it's university. It will never be fixed like that!

The midwives at Basildon hospital ignored a problem I have with my cervix (they do not dilate) and they left me in labour for over three days without any form of pain relief. That's three days where I walked, non-stop, where I could not sit down, sleep or even go to the toilet and was in so much agony I could have cut my own throat. On the third day, after repeatedly trying to have myself admitted, they finally admitted me and dumped me onto a pitch black ward where I could not even see my hand in front of my face. My partner was sent home and I was told that I'd probably be induced a WEEK LATER by a midwife who I had never met before that point who didn't check my contractions - despite being on my THIRD DAY of labour, being on all fours, crying in agony and having the urge to push. I have no idea how long I was like that in the dark, but I got to the point where I could no longer cope with the pain anymore and had I not screamed for the midwife and begged her to check me (she initially refused) I would have delivered my baby completely on my own in total darkness on that ward. Once she had checked me, she said I was having the baby there and then. Despite the fact I was crowning, she made me walk all the way from that ward to the delivery suites which was excruciating and humiliating. I nearly delivered my son on the stairs. When I finally made it to the delivery suite, another midwife barked at me to get on the bed (the only words she spoke to me). She never helped me to get onto the bed. I had barely laid on the bed when I delivered my son.
I might as well have stayed at home. At least I would have had support and a light on.
The midwives at Basildon hospital are lazy, cruel, rude and can't be bothered to check contractions or read notes properly. They don't listen to Mothers either. At no point during my three day labour did a single midwife check my contractions. Not once. They only used my cervix as a guide to labour - despite it being in my notes that my cervix do not dilate on their own. They have also failed to give me TWO blood transfusions that I desperately needed which has left me with serious health issues since. I also saw young midwives sniggering and laughing at women crying in agony. We were treated like animals on the maternity ward afterwards. I lost a lot of blood which the midwives ignored and my sheets were soaked through with blood. I wasn't even fed one day and left hospital dehydrated. My GP couldn't believe how ill and dehydrated I was and was disgusted that I had been discharged in that state.
There is so much more I could tell you about the hellish suffering that filthy hospital put me through and the disgusting way women were treated on the maternity wards afterwards.
I would not advice any pregnant women to have a baby at Basildon hospital. Their staff have no shame for the women they have abused, tortured and destroyed. I complained at the time and was ignored. I complained again last year and was fobbed off by a member of their staff who either can't read an email properly or is a lair (she claimed I said they couldn't use my notes - I still have the emails and I made no such comment in them) and they even blocked me on Twitter when I complained to them on there.

Food is brought round at meal times by non medical staff, then taken away by them sometime later even if not eaten it is not fed back to the nurses or medical staff so if a patient stops eating or cannot lift a fork etc. it is not discovered for 3 days!!
At one meal she knocked out her cannula tubes on the food tray trying to eat and blood went al over her tray, she hit the buzzer but no one came, luckily I happened to walk in to find a pool of blood and shouted out to the staff for help, they took away the tray leaving her food behind with no knife and fork so she could not eat it, they kept saying they would bring a fresh knife and fork but never did, then some time later the non-medical staff took the un-eaten plate of food away so she had no chance to eat that meal. They cant even be bothered to tape back the tubes when not being used so that she can use her hand to eat. Another meal they brought her bangers and mash even though she is allergic to pork and has it clearly marked on her red wrist band and notes!!

Of course the other one that recently followed was "To solve the overpopulation, we need to reduce it by 82% Now, there's the "theory to end all theories." Just like it did in 1914. Then the asian 'flu in 1923. then the idea of using machine guns in 1926. To live in a world where the greedy eat their own babies, you can't miss a few theories can you?
