EXTRA officers have been drafted in from Essex Police HQ to tackle a spate of burglaries in Lee Chapel.

Thirteen homes around Somercotes, Little Lullaway and Great Knightleys have been targeted since the beginning of September, the highest number since February.

Thieves are jemmying front doors and police are warning people to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity to them immediately on 999.

Sgt Fergus Caulfield, from the Basildon Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Although Basildon district has seen 100 fewer residential burglaries than the same period last year, recent weeks have seen an increase in the number in certain parts of Laindon, particularly around Lee Chapel.

“During September there have been 13 offences in this area, which is of concern as the ward hasn’t seen a level of offences this high since January and February.

“We appeal to residents to ensure their windows and doors are locked, not just closed and keys to vehicles are secured upstairs at night.

“If you see or hear anything suspicious or believe a crime is in progress, please call 999.

“Do not be concerned you might be wasting our time. It is better to be safe than sorry.”

Sgt Caulfield said the burglaries were being committed on different days of the week and at different times.

Basildon police had drafted in an operational support group from Essex Police Headquarters in Chelmsford.

The team can be drafted in to any area of the county to help local officers tackle a crime trend.

Two of the Lee Chapel burglaries saw cars stolen.

On September 13, a blue Ford Fiesta was taken from a house in Mynchens and was later found burnt out in Gloucester Park.

A similar offence took place the following night in The Frame, when a red Ford Focus was stolen and later recovered in Puck Lane.

Sgt Caulfield added: “Each and every burglary can be extremely upsetting for the victims.”
