A MAN was arrested near Benfleet following a fatal crash in north Essex in which a 95-year-old man was killed.

The accident happened in Frinton Road in Kirby Cross after a Volvo tipper truck was in collision with a Suzuki Swift car.

A 46-year-old man from Dagenham was subsequently arrested on the A130 near Benfleet on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop, and being unfit through drink or drugs.

He has been taken to Basildon Police Station where he currently remains in custody for questioning.

Emergency services had been called to Kirby Cross at 10.25pm on Friday following reports of the collision.

Ambulance paramedics also attended and treated the driver of the Suzuki but he was sadly declared deceased at the scene.

The road was closed while police investigations were carried out and the vehicle was recovered.

It was reopened shortly before 4am.
