Volunteers have been clearing up rubbish in an attempt to improve the cleanliness of the Laindon Centre.

The initiative is the latest improvement scheme being delivered by the Love Laindon community group.

Other work being carried out by the group includes planting and improvements to the war memorial, which stands in front of the centre.

Clare Hogg, from Love Laindon, said: “We just want to do our bit to make the place look better.

“We get together and do some weeding, litter picking and planting and just generally try to make it a nicer place.”

Basildon Council has also set aside £50,000 to improve the area and attract a new owner for the site.

Work taking place includes car park surface repairs, cleaning graffiti and cutting back trees and shrubs to improve security.

In December, developer Mar City exchanged contracts on the site and hopes to complete a deal next month.

The award-winning housing firm is expected to develop the site for housing and retail to regenerate the area.

Mar City and the council are also planning to open a community cafe at the centre, which will serve as an information point to provide updates and consult residents about the future of the site.

Council leader Phil Turner said: “We’re optimistic about the future but we know things aren’t going to happen over night.

“That’s why it is heartening to see Love Laindon’s work and why the council is working with partners to make more value for money improvements.

“We want the Laindon Centre to be the best it can be before, during and after redevelopment.”

The council hopes future development of the Laindon Centre site will include a new health centre and a community hub.

Love Laindon is based at a unit at the shopping centre and welcomes new members.
