Basildon's bid to become a borough headed by a mayor is backed

COUNCILLORS have voted to push ahead with plans to change Basildon to a borough with a ceremonial mayor as a figurehead head.

The ruling Tories claim the move will raise Basildon’s status, enable it to shake off its New Town stigma, and attract more investment from the Government and businesses.

But it will also mean the council can remove the post of chairman and appoint a mayor instead.

However the move won’t lead to any extra duties and none of the powers of elected mayors such as London’s Boris Johnson.

The audacity of the politicians who have ripped the country off for decades and destroyed the Great in Britain presume to think they are actually worth anything but mockery.

Hang the scum , hang em high.

They are trying to distract everybody from the real issues in Basildon, ie the state of the houses through lack of repairs, the ongoing 'traveller' fiasco etc. This just goes to show their arrogance and contempt for the people of Basildon

Other than ego massaging, will be be told what will be the real benefits to Basildon, it's voters and the surrounding area?
The word 'ceremonial' does not inspire me, at all! Sounds like another free-loading jolly to me!

Want to see how a Borough Council works? Take a look at the venal and corrupt bunch of tories in Civic Hall in Southend.
Like your council tax rises to be low each year? Forget that if you get Borough status. Southend's council tax rise this year is one of the highest in the country thanks to Southend's ruling tories.
