Charity warns benefits cutbacks will lead to a jump in homelessness

A CHARITY has warned of an explosion of homelessness in south Essex after new figures revealed thousands of tenants will be affected by cuts to housing benefit.

Across the region 94 per cent of the 13,000 households renting privately and claiming housing benefit will be affected by Government plans to slash the amount paid out by £1.8billion.

This could see the 180 families living in four bedroom properties in Basildon, Castle Point and Thurrock lose out on about £100 a month.

Families in the same situation in Southend and Rochford will have to find another £80 a month to pay the rent.

The figures were compiled by the Department for Work and Pensions as part of an impact assessment of the emergency budget announced by the coalition Government in June.

Leslie Morphy, chief executive of homeless charity Crisis, branded the cuts counter-productive.

She said: “As vulnerable private tenants see their income slashed, they will inevitably fall into rent arrears or debt and face the spectre of homelessness.

“Not only would a surge in homelessness cause damage for generations to come in south Essex, it is also counter-productive.

“The costs to society of somebody who has lost their home are huge compared to keeping someone in accommodation.”

The cuts are due to come into force next year.

Currently, the maximum housing benefit paid out is based on the midpoint between the lowest and highest market rents in an area.

So if a resident lives in an area where rents range from £50 a week to £250 a week, a claimant would be entitled to up to £150.

However, from October next year, the midpoint figure will be reduced, so a resident living in the same area would be able to claim closer to £100.

In addition, different sized households are entitled to claim different amounts.

But from April next year families will only be able to claim the amount for a four-bedroom property, however many children they have.

Peter Reed, service operations manager for homeless charity Harp, said they were ready to deal with the impact.

He said: “With what is going on, there was bound to be some money that would be cut by the Government and we may even face cutbacks ourselves.

“We cannot be negative about these things and we will deal with the increase if and when it happens.

“We have a very positive attitude to helping people get integrated back into the community. We are not just about taking in homeless people. We do what we can to see why they became homeless in the first place and try to resolve their issues.”

These cutbacks will force many to actually go out and get a job, and rightly so. People should not depend on handouts to raise their children, nor should they think they are entitled to hand outs to help them with their rent if they are not working, but capable of.

Once they miss a few meals they will get off their duffs and find a job.

bring on more welfare cutbacks to the able, but leave the genuine cases alone.

i agree it will cause there to be more homeless people :(
instead of welfare cuts they should cut rich peoples wages, put up tax for middle and upper class families, cut back on the number of mp's and councilliers, and cut mp and councilliers pay!

So penalise successful people? They should cut welfare to the bare necesssities and to only those who have paid for it, teh sick and disabled. Middle and upper class already (except for the tax dodgers) pay plenty of tax. Cutting wages will just drive people out of this country and we will become even more third world than we are!!!

Hoooray !!

At long last people are beginning to realise that you cannot keep getting something for nothing and that money GIVEN to anyone OR anything has been achieved by someone actually working for it THAT IS WHAT GOVERNMENT MONEY IS!!!!!

I don't mind giving MY MONEY to the needy BUT not to the workshy.

I find it intriguing to read ill-informed comments such as some of those above which unwisely equate people who receive housing benefit with "the workshy".

There are plenty of folk out there who do "get off their duffs" and work for a living, but, due to low incomes, end up having to claim Housing Benefit to make ends meet. Hardly workshy.

Mightn't it be a good idea to actually find out about a subject before mounting that soapbox? Y'know, just for a change... ;)

The benefit scrounging won't get off their butts to work for a living, tehrefore tax payers who actually contribute to this are needed. I assume you are one of those benefit takers who wants more, yet isn't smart or ambitious enough to earn it on their own.

What a load of rubbish. You really are proving to be the village idiot! Do you not think tht those that have money, most of them it is through hard work and effort. I'm absolutely sick to the back teeth of paying taxes to support the long term useless who ponce and mump off the tax payer for a living. Why should I help those that cannot be bothered to help themselves? No, there is no valid reason so don't overtax your few working brain cells trying to conclude a justifiable reason!

I will gladly help those that cannot work, but not those that will not. Benefits should be cut and what remains should not be paid in cash but in vouchers. Or, as I have said before food parcels to be collected from the local signing on office once you have looked for work. 9-5 job clubs will then be compulsary to recieve any help.
