GENERAL trade union GMB has expressed its disappointment at the closure of Basildon's Pilkington Glass factory.
It is understood the factory, in Paycocke Road, will close at the end of March, with the loss of 30 jobs.
Production is being moved to sites in Basingstoke and elsewhere, with the move blamed on the downturn in building projects.
The news led the GMB to ridicule hopes the private sector would help provide jobs for public sector workers facing redundancies because of Government cuts.
GMB organiser Mick Ainsley said, “So much for the private sector picking up all the public service jobs that are being thrown away by the coalition government. Less disposable incomes resulting from these job losses the more of these job losses and factory closures we will see.”
