FIVE fire crews were called to tackle a house fire on the Felmores Estate in Basildon The blaze erupted at a home in Winstree, Basildon, shortly before 2pm.

Fire chiefs confirmed the blaze started in one home in Winstree and spread through the roof to five other houses.

Crews put out the flames by 3pm and the entire street was evacuated.

Assistant divisional officer for Essex Country Fire and Rescue, Dave Moore said: "The buildings are timber framed and timber clad and that presented a real problem to crews, but thanks to the hard work and professionalism they prevented this fire from spreading further and destroying many more homes."

Four people - two children and two adults - were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to Basildon Hospital for treatment.
