Signalling problems at Pitsea delayed trains between London Fenchurch Street and Shoebury during this evening's rush hour.
A loss of power at Basildon caused the issue just after 6pm and some trains were held at stations to prevent them being stuck between stops while the issue was being fixed.
Two coast-bound trains were stopped at Basildon and Laindon and a London-bound train was terminated at Benfleet.
Customers were advised to use the Greater Anglia service from Upminster to Romford, changing there for services towards Southend.
Network Rail engineers were called to deal with the problem.
