YOUNG athletes at a Canvey school were celebrating after coming out on top at a boroughwide swimming competition.

Students from 15 schools across Castle Point went head to head in an annual swimming gala at Runnymede Swimming Pool in Kiln Road, Thundersley.

Youngsters at the St Joseph’s Catholic primary school in Vaagen Road, Canvey, were overjoyed after being presented with the overall winner’s cup after snatching a host of medals at the event.

It is the third year running the school has won the prestigious award.

Pupils came away with an impressive 19 awards including nine 1st place medals, five 2nd place medals and five 3rd place medals.

Paul Collingwood, headteacher, commended his pupils for their hard work and dedication in preparing for the competition.

He said: “My congratulations to all those children who took part.

The children have worked and trained hard during their swimming lessons here at school.

“This is a great success for St.Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.
