MOTORISTS slowed down to look at one of the more unusual visitors to Southend Central Library – a shire horse named Truman.

Truman helped to launch the Big Summer Read campaign and met young fans of Rachael the Railway Horse, a children’s book by Ian Cryer.

The author told the children stories of his experiences of working horses and signed copies of his book.

There were also displays by Okami Karate and Fitness School and Southend Firebirds Majorettes to highlight the importance of sport and fitness. The Big Summer Read is an annual reading scheme run by most libraries. This year it has a sport theme to tie in with the Beijing Olympics.
